BEYOND THE “LEAST LIMITING WATER RANGE”: RETHINKING SOIL PHYSICS RESEARCH IN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
van Lier,Quirijn de Jong; Gubiani,Paulo Ivonir.
As opposed to objective definitions in soil physics, the subjective term “soil physical quality” is increasingly found in publications in the soil physics area. A supposed indicator of soil physical quality that has been the focus of attention, especially in the Brazilian literature, is the Least Limiting Water Range (RLL), translated in Portuguese as "Intervalo Hídrico Ótimo" or IHO. In this paper the four limiting water contents that define RLLare discussed in the light of objectively determinable soil physical properties, pointing to inconsistencies in the RLLdefinition and calculation. It also discusses the interpretation of RLL as an indicator of crop productivity or soil physical quality, showing its inability to consider common phenological and...

Comparative evaluation of manual cassava harvesting techniques in Kerala, India CIGR Journal
Amponsah, Shadrack Kwadwo; Sheriff, J Thajudhin; Byju, Gangadharan.
Abstract: In India, cassava is consumed as a secondary staple along with the main staple, rice, and many rural poor consume it as the staple in different forms of preparations.  Though harvesting is known to be one of the most difficult and cost-intensive field operation in cassava cultivation, mechanisation of cassava harvesting is still very low in most cassava growing areas of India due to topographic constraints, methods and scale of cultivation.  The most viable solution to overcome these constraints is to promote the use of more efficient manual harvesting tools.  Thus, the main objective of this study was to field evaluate the efficiency of four manual cassava harvesting techniques under different land preparation methods in terms of field capacity,...

PEDOTRANSFER FUNCTIONS FOR WATER RETENTION IN THE MAIN SOILS FROM THE BRAZILIAN COASTAL PLAINS Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Elidiane da; Curi,Nilton; Ferreira,Mozart Martins; Volpato,Margarete Marin Lordelo; Santos,Walbert Júnior Reis dos; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho.
Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) are equations used to estimate soil characteristics difficult to determine from other easily obtained ones. Water retention in soil is used in several agronomic and environmental applications, but its direct determination is time consuming and onerous, therefore PTFs are alternatives to obtaining this information more quickly and economically. The aims of this study were to generate a database and develop PTFs for water retention at potentials of -33 kPa (field capacity) and -1500 kPa (permanent wilting point) for Yellow Argisol and Yellow Latosol from the Brazilian Coastal Plains region. The Coastal Plains soils are mostly developed from Barreiras formation (pre-weathered sediments) and their main uses are sugarcane,...

Performance Assessment of Manual Rice Harvesting Methods under Farmer’s Field Conditions CIGR Journal
Amponsah, Shadrack Kwadwo; Addo, Ahmad; Djidohopkin, Ella; Olaye, Romaric Biaou.
A better understanding of field performances for traditional harvesting methods and tools is essential in facilitating future improvement on design and overall efficiency. Performance of different manual harvesting tools and methods was evaluated under farmer’s field conditions for IR841 and Nerica L20 rice varieties in Benin. Results from evaluation showed that an average of 84 to 161 man-hours was required to thresh a hectare of rice field using either the threshing by impact “bambam” or bag beating method.  Less time was however required to thresh IR841 than Nerica L20 varieties, irrespective of manual threshing method used. Similarly, between 58 to 95 man-hours was required to harvest a hectare of field using either a cutlass or sickle. However, to...

Performance of lugged cage wheel for wetland cultivation CIGR Journal
Kumar, Arvind; Baruah, D.C..
Rice is a major food grain crop grown in North-eastern Himalayan region of India with varying level of mechanization. Rice field remains wet and loose for a considerable period of growing season. Land preparation of rice field is one of the critical operations both in terms of timeliness and energy requirement. The losses up to 70%-80% of input power are reported while negotiating wetland terrain by tractors or power tillers, particularly in difficult terrain. This paper described the attempts made to address the issue of wetland traction primarily relevant to mechanization of rice cultivation in North-eastern Himalayan region of India. There is a variety of design of cage wheels used on power tillers with varying levels of performances based on the soil...

Plant-available soil water capacity: estimation methods and implications Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Bruno Montoani; Silva,Érika Andressa da; Oliveira,Geraldo César de; Ferreira,Mozart Martins; Serafim,Milson Evaldo.
The plant-available water capacity of the soil is defined as the water content between field capacity and wilting point, and has wide practical application in planning the land use. In a representative profile of the Cerrado Oxisol, methods for estimating the wilting point were studied and compared, using a WP4-T psychrometer and Richards chamber for undisturbed and disturbed samples. In addition, the field capacity was estimated by the water content at 6, 10, 33 kPa and by the inflection point of the water retention curve, calculated by the van Genuchten and cubic polynomial models. We found that the field capacity moisture determined at the inflection point was higher than by the other methods, and that even at the inflection point the estimates...

RETENTION CURVES AND AVAILABLE WATER CAPACITY IN LATOSOLS REA
Maia,Felipe C. de O.; Bufon,Vinicius B.; Leão,Tairone P..
ABSTRACT Water stored in the soil between field capacity and the permanent wilting point, is known as the available water capacity. Its availability to be effectively used by plants depends on the type of soil and its water retention characteristics. The aim of this work was to compile information about water retention curves in Latosols, and to provide a first approximation of values and most likely amplitudes for water storage and available water capacity of these soils. The database was constituted from information collected from articles, theses, dissertations and other publications. Soil water retention curves, as well as available water, were estimated for the order Latosols, and for the suborders Red Latosol (RL), Red-Yellow Latosol (RYL) and Yellow...

Soil spatial variability and the estimation of the irrigation water depth Scientia Agricola
Reichardt,Klaus; Silva,José Carlos de Araújo; Bassoi,Luis Henrique; Timm,Luís Carlos; Oliveira,Julio Cesar Martins de; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Pilotto,João Eduardo.
The effects of soil water spatial variability previous to irrigation and of the field capacity on the estimation of irrigation water depth are evaluated. The experiment consisted of a common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crop established on a Kandiudalfic Eutrudox of Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, irrigated by central pivot, in which soil water contents were evaluated with a depth neutron gauge, in a grid of 20x4 points with lag of 0.5 m. In a given situation, the 80 calculated irrigation water depths presented a coefficient of variation of 29.3%, with an average water value of 18 mm, maximum of 41mm and minimum of 9 mm. It is concluded that the only practical way of irrigation is the use of an average water depth, due to the inherent variability of the soil, and...
